the Zonta Club of Brampton/Caledon, part of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together since 1919 to advance the status of women

What is Zonta?

Zonta is a world-wide service organization of executives in business and the professions working to improve the legal, political and economic status of women.  Zontians serve both international and local communities.

Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, Zonta International has grown to include more than 1258 clubs in 69 countries with more than 32,000 members.
Zonta plays an important role at the United Nations and currently holds Non-Governmental Organizational status.  In addition, Zonta has been granted Consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, UNICEF, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the International Labour Organization and the Council of Europe.  Zonta maintains active representatives at the United Nations’ sights in Geneva, New York, Paris and Vienna.

Zonta International enjoys a special partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).  Like Zonta, UNIFEM recognizes the importance of focusing attention on the activities and roles of women which are critical to sustainable development.

Financially, Zonta contributes to UNIFEM to fund women’s self help projects.   These projects have focused on providing labour-saving appropriate technologies, vocational training and credit to enhance women’s roles as farmers, entrepreneurs, managers and technicians.

Through the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards, Zonta International has awarded over 1000 fellowships totaling over 5 million dollars.   These have been presented to women pursuing graduate studies in aerospace-related sciences and engineering.

At the local level, our club provides bursaries to assist women in furthering their education and training.  Many of these people choose non-traditional fields of endeavor and we support these young women pioneers.

We communicate with our members monthly via the 'Zonta Tree' which is an award winning newsletter and invite you to read it. Click on the link below.

Service- Zonta members serve and make a difference in the community to which they belong.

Networking and Fellowship- Zonta provides common values to work together to meet common goals; their co-operative efforts also open doors to friendships world-wide.

Diversity- Zonta’s classification system ensures a broad membership drawn from many businesses and professions, and thus provides opportunities for interaction with others outside one’s own particular area of expertise.

Education- Many of Zonta’s International and local projects involve education, whether awards or fellowships for students or literacy programs for adults.

International Interaction & Travel- Zonta provides members with a rare opportunity for international participation through its links with several United Nations agencies, through annual, local workshops/conferences and through its biennial international convention.

Zonta: The Name

The word Zonta, signifying honest and trustworthy in the Teton dialect of the Sioux, an Amerindian group, was chosen from many suggestions by the women who founded the Confederation of Zonta Clubs in 1919.

The emblem that evolved thereafter also draws from several Sioux symbols, blending the individual elements shown here into a composite logo, and extending their meaning to embrace the goals and objectives of Zontians, as the members came to be called.

Zontians consider themselves “a group of people inspired by common goals- namely community service and work understanding- banded together to achieve them in a framework of loyalty, honesty and trustworthiness”
